Australian director Kitty Green returns with a new dread-packed thriller this year since 2019’s The Assistant with The Royal Hotel. It stars Julia Garner (Ozark, Inventing Anna), Jessica Henwick (Game of Thrones, Iron Fist), and Hugo Weaving (The Matrix, Love Me) in main roles.

Inspired by Pete Gleeson’s 2016 documentary Hotel Coolgardie, it follows two American backpackers in Australia, who, after running out of cash, take a bartending job at a pub in a remote Outback mining town.

But in an unexpected turn of events, what begins as a simple undertaking for some extra money and a little bit of adventure escalates in terrible ways they didn’t see coming.

What is the plot of The Royal Hotel?

After intense partying in Sydney left Hanna (Garner) and Liv (Henwick), two American young backpackers in need of money, they seek the help of an employment agency, which then leads them to work as a bartender at a pub called ‘The Royal Hotel‘.

With the pub situated in the middle of nowhere, Hanna is hesitant but Liv considers it an adventure, convincing the former to go for it. Upon taking the job, they meet the owners, Billy (Weaving) and Carol (Ursula Yovich), as well as the pub’s many regulars.

But even before getting the chance to navigate the male-dominated town, made more disconcerting by most of its residents, they’re quickly thrown into aggravating situations that only get worse by the minute.

They soon  realise that the discomfort and antagonism they’ve been getting from the beginning isn’t culture shock, but something that’s going to get them in a deeper ordeal if they don’t get out soon.

Green directed the film from a screenplay she co-wrote with Oscar Redding (Top of the Lake). It also reunited the director with lead actress Julia Garner, who also starred in Green’s film The Assistant.
