Death in Paradise’s spin-off, Beyond Paradise, follows DI Humphrey Goodman, who we first met at the start of Death in Paradise Season 3 when he replaced DI Richard Poole. Detective Goodman may be wild and clumsy but his brilliance is undeniable, making him popular among fans.

While dedicated viewers have been speculating that Goodman may return to Death in Paradise at some point, an entire spin-off series revolving around his character was definitely unexpected.

Even better, the show has been renewed for a second season, which you can finally watch this week.

What is the plot of Beyond Paradise?

In the second half of Death in Paradise Season 6, DI Humphrey Goodman resigned from his post in Saint Marie to be with the love of his life, now his fiancée Martha Lloyd, promising he’d move anywhere with her. And that was it. We never heard from them again – until now.

In Beyond Paradise, we learned more about Humphrey and Martha’s life after we last saw them reuniting in London. With the detective agreeing to be with Martha wherever she wants, they end up relocating to the Devonshire town of Shipton Abbott, Martha’s hometown near the beautiful Devonshire coast.

There, Humphrey gets a new DI job and despite his longing for a quieter life, it would seem unlikely because as it turns out, the not so sleepy town has actually an alarming crime rate.

An entire family disappearing without a trace is just one of the mysteries that DI Goodman will have to solve alongside the local police force.

While Humphrey gets back to detective work, Martha also embarks on a new journey, pursuing her dream of running her own restaurant. Together, they navigate life’s ups and downs and work as a team despite their respective duties clashing at times and putting their relationship to the test.

In season 2, Humphrey and Martha will continue their journey to becoming parents. After a devastating loss in the first season following their arduous IVF journey, the couple are now considering the possibility of fostering. Marriage is also a possibility as they’ve managed to survive their plight in season 1.

Shipton Abbott also has its own shares of challenges in the form of baffling crime scenes that are sure to send DI Humphrey and his team scrambling for answers. There’s a death on the steam train, a missing teacher, and more coming to keep them occupied.

The Death in Paradise spin-off series is created by Tony Jordan and executive produced by Tim Key from Red Planet Pictures. It stars Kris Marshall and Sally Bretton in the lead roles.
