Russian President Vladimir Putin’s fierce critic, Alexei Navalny, has died in a Russian prison colony in the Arctic Circle, nearly four years after surviving a military nerve agent poisoning. After recovering, he returned to Russia, only to to get arrested and ordered to serve 19 years on extremism charges, a conviction widely perceived as politically malicious.

In 2022, a documentary following his 2020 assassination attempt won the Best Documentary Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards. A terrifying exploration of the Russian opposition leader’s uncovering of the truth, as well as offering a longer, harder look at all the lethal risks he was willing to take, the documentary film is Navalny’s final message to the world.

What is the Navalny documentary about?

On 20th August 2020, Russian president Vladimir Putin’s political foe Alexei Navalny was poisoned with a military-grade nerve agent.

This 2022 documentary film by Canadian director Daniel Roher chronicles Navalny’s political rise, the events related to his assassination attempt, as well as his own investigation into his poisoning. Navalny had repeatedly accused President Putin, although the government denied involvement.

Providing unrivalled access to Navalny and his inner circle, the documentary offers a tense and absorbing look at the workings of Russia’s most vocal opposition leader and his real-life fight against corruption. After surviving the assassination and recovering in Germany, Navalny returned to Russia only to be arrested.

The Navalny film first premiered at the Sundance Film Festival early last year where it won the Audience Award and Festival Favorite Award. It further gained mainstream recognition after subsequent successes at this year’s Academy Awards, Critics’ Choice, and BAFTA.

In a shocking news, Navalny has died on 16 February 2024 in an Arctic prison. He was 46.
