What is the plot of House of the Dragon?

The HBO series explores the events leading up to the Targaryen civil war when a war of succession was fought by two rival monarchs over King Viserys I’s throne. It became known as the “Dance of the Dragons”, an important history in the seven kingdoms that were mentioned in passing throughout Game of Thrones episodes by characters like Joffrey and the beloved Shireen.

Just like in the book, Prince Aegon Targaryen and Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen battle for the throne of Westeros after the death of their father King Viserys I, the successor of the Old King Jaehaerys Targaryen. Princess Rhaenyra is the king’s firstborn child with pure Valyrian blood, and although a female ruler in the fantastical lands of Westeros was unheard of, she was groomed by her father to succeed him.

When the king remarried (choosing his daughter’s best friend as his second wife, no less), his eldest son Prince Aegon was born, setting up for a bitter rivalry that caused a fiery civil war. At this point, most of us already knew how all this changed the course of Targaryen history forever. As a bonus, massive repercussion, their family feud got so vicious that it resulted in the extinction of dragons, the very same magical creatures that helped cement their power.

House of the Dragon is created by Ryan Condal and George R. R. Martin, based on the latter’s “Fire & Blood” novel. The TV adaptation has been noted to both incorporate and remove elements for storytelling purposes. Some of these changes include Laenor Velaryon’s fake death, the characterisation of both Alicent and Rhaenyra (plus their close teen friendship), and the absence of Nettles and Sara Snow.

What to expect in House of the Dragon Season 2?

Season 2 picked up where the first one left off – a family tragedy further fuelling the rage between the Greens and the Blacks. With the devastating deaths of Prince Lucerys on the hands of Prince Aemond’s dragon Vhagar and Prince Jaehaerys at Prince Daemon’s behest (Aemond was the original target), Westeros can say goodbye to any chance for peace.

Other shows like House of the Dragon

House of the Dragon is just like its predecessor, filled with betrayal and political intrigue. With House of the Dragon Season 2 coming out in June, there’s still a few months before new episodes drop on streaming. Worry not because there are similar shows you can watch while waiting for the new season premiere.

Of course, there are eight seasons of Game of Thrones to tide you over. Even if you’ve seen the entire series, rewatching it would still be a blast. Other alternatives include The Rings of Power, Foundation, The Wheel of Time, His Dark Materials, and Succession since it’s all about power struggle within the family.
