Breaking into the homes of well-known celebrities, including Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Rachel Bilson, Orlando Bloom, Megan Fox, and many others, the group stole personal belongings and cash worth $3 million (A$4.7 million). While the whats, the whos, the whens, the wheres, and even the hows had been established, there’s still one thing that hasn’t been fully explored yet – the whys of it all.

With the supposed ‘ringleader’ Rachel Lee speaking about it for the first time, we’ll finally learn her motivation in masterminding one of Hollywood’s most infamous celebrity heists.

What’s in this Guide?

The Ringleader: The Case of the Bling Ring preview

Between October 2008 through August 2009, a group of teenagers and 20-somethings broke into celebrity homes in Hollywood, stealing millions worth of cash and belongings, including bags, designer clothing, and jewellery. Convicted of the theft were Bling Ring members: Rachel Lee, Nick Prugo, Alexis Neiers, Diana Tamayo, Courtney Ames, Johnny Ajar, and Roy Lopez Jr.

Now more than a decade later, Rachel Lee, the so-called teenage mastermind of the notorious Hollywood heist is sitting down for an interview with HBO’s The Ringleader: The Case of the Bling Ring.

More than examining her motivations to steal from the homes of the celebrities she looked up to, which then quickly evolved into the infamous crime spree, the documentary also looks into celebrity worship. It additionally explores other possible reasons behind her actions, including the state of her mental health and the outrageous landscape of celebrity excess, encouraging the teens to indulge in their yearning to experience all-out glamour.

The Ringleader is directed by Erin Lee Carr, who also serves as a producer alongside Dani Sloane. It’s a collaborative project between A Story Syndicate Production and Carr Lot Productions with Sandi Tan, Dan Cogan, Liz Garbus, Jon Bardin, and Kate Barry as executive producing the film. Nancy Abraham, Lisa Heller, and Sara Rodriguez are also executive producers for HBO.
